Infrastructure

Sustainable infrastructure that improves liveability is a key strategic concern of FONA. We focus on infrastructure development that has long terms benefits, providing opportunities for greater productivity and connecting communities with the world.

The importance of infrastructure

Investments in infrastructure are crucial in allowing communities to harness their strengths to their advantage and achieving sustainable development. It has long been recognised that growth in productivity and improvements in health and education outcomes require investment in infrastructure. Inadequate infrastructure leads to a lack of access to education, training, markets and jobs, creating a major barrier to doing business and enhancing productivity. Find out more about our Infrastructure projects; Resilient Housing and Classroom Reconstruction.

Long Term Projects

With many infrastructure projects in Nepal concentrating on the development of roads and transport, FONA is focusing on areas that have previously lacked attention, such as resilient housing and education facilities. The current emphasis in development is on short term relief after disasters, and pays too little attention to ensuring that resilient infrastructure is in place before hazards occur.

Many houses in Nepal have still not been rebuilt since the 2015 earthquake. There is currently the opportunity to improve on traditional housing and rebuild in a manner that regenerates communities. Resilient housing is essential for communities to live securely and plan for the future. FONA’s project includes community training in best practice construction techniques as well as restoring confidence in traditional materials that are earthquake resistant.

Rebuilding education structures is also a key focus so as to remove students from temporary structures which do not provide the best education opportunities and training facilities.

FONA’s work in this area centres on connecting the best minds across the globe with local communities and partnering with other NFPs to share expertise and obtain the best results.
